"Amy thinks she's sneaky but she-snot"

I remember my brother teasing me with that line as a kid and it actually felt appropriate to use since I have a cold right now. I haven't written in almost a month and continue to put it off because I feel like there is so much to say.  "Baby steps" I keep telling myself. So today we will start off with a random, quasi-pointless story from yesterday that I would like to blame on "pregnancy crazies."

Yesterday in the midst of a sore throat and runny nose I went to Sunflower Market. I grabbed some peaches and spinach and then meandered my way through the rest of the store feeling sorry for myself for feeling so sick- Never a good idea for me. By the time I made it to the register, I had also picked up cinnamon gummi bears, a bulk of strawberry sour punch straws, and a six pack of Pellegrino Aranciata which I had been craving all week.  I have definitely had moments of random cravings and impulse buys while pregnant but I normally don't really even like how candy makes me feel so this one was a weird combo.

Naturally, I started chewing on the cinnamon bears in the car on the way home, (and actually finished off the last few while writing this post.) When I got home I busted open the strawberry sour straws only to find out they were gross! They tasted like twizzlers with something funky on them.  Then after popping open a can of Pellegrino, I all of a sudden had this major surge of guilt and urge to find hiding places for everything.  I don't know if I felt more ashamed for buying candy in the first place, or buying candy that was gross... but that's not really the point. It reminded me of when I was a kid and tried to hide stolen pieces of my sister's halloween candy, which she of course had saved all year. It wasn't even good candy I would steal- it was the left over tootsie rolls and smarties that I didn't even like but ate anyway. I wasn't a clepto or anything, just a slightly chubby 4-year-old with a sweet tooth.   I stuck the strawberry sour straws and cinnamon bears under our cabinets and actually put food on top to hide it.  I "hid" the cans of Pellegrino in the laundry room  thinking "Adam will never see it." Why that felt so important to me at the time- I will never know.

Anyway, later that night after Adam was getting dinner in the kitchen, the crazies lifted and I realized I was literally hiding candy from my husband like a little kid.   So I told him I had been hiding sweets from him all day and he pulled out all my hidden loot and laughed.  We ended up throwing away the sour straws after coming to a consensus that they were in-fact gross and he asked me what else I was hiding from him. I tried to psycho-analyze myself and figure out if there was a deeper issue I was hiding from him- if the candy was symbolic for something else- but nothing came to mind and besides, we were in the middle of watching a movie :)

I don't mean to totally overanalyze a few pieces of candy but I started thinking today about how "hiding" things is just part of flawed humanity. I hide because I am ashamed, or greedy or don't want to feel judgement.  I hide to avoid truth. It makes me thankful for Adam and other dear friends in my life who know me so well they literally laugh at my attempts to hide fears, hurts, hopes, or $4 in candy and love me anyway. They are such a picture of God's posture towards me that I all to often forget.

the nesting begins

Adam completed one of his first tasks as a dad by putting the Bean's crib together on Tuesday. I felt like it was a pretty momentous occasion so I took pictures. The crib was a great find! It's a wood pottery barn crib that I got from a garage sale for $75! The couple loaded it in my car for me and told me I had "good karma."  I stopped by another garage sale in our neighborhood and they gave me a wooden child's snow sled for free and told me to enjoy being a parent :) Thank you sweet couple! I think we will!
I'm guessing the baby's room will be my "work-in-progress" for the summer but its' fun to have it started!  I'll post pictures when we have more stuff together.

20 weeks

Today Adam and I had our twenty week ultrasound and it was incredible! The baby started moving alot more over the past week so it was really cool to actually see what's going on inside. Baby is in the breech position and loves to use my stomach for a pillow and kicks my bladder with it's feet every few seconds- which may explain my continued nausea and constant urge to go to the bathroom.  It was really active during the ultrasound and susie had a hard time getting it to hold still long enough to show us what was what. We saw it suck it's thumb about four times in the 30 minutes we were in there which was super cute! The picture below shows Baby's head on the left and tummy on the right with an arm and hand reaching towards the mouth- sucking on that thumb. In other images you can see a clear shot of the babies nose and this baby is definitely a Yablonski/Callaway combo with a pointy little schnoz.  Susie said everything looked great, all measurments were in the healthy range and Baby's heartbeat was 144. Life is such an undeserved miracle and this makes us even more excited to meet our little bean!

You may be wondering if it's a boy or a girl....so are we?!! We decided to wait and let it be a surprise for delivery so Adam can be the first one to announce it.  I kept going back and forth over the last few days on whether I thought I could really wait to find out - but the decision was kind of made for us when the Bean's legs were crossed or it had it's back toward us kicking up a storm. What do you think? BOY OR GIRL? leave a comment and let me know....

one day...

My friend Laura sent me a link for this super cute owl costume. It may be a little early but I am determined that one day Baby Callaway will embrace this costume! I better start brushing up on my sewing skills! The instructions and more pictures are found at Mom Inc Daily.

In other news.. I have a new found love for banana splits. I ate almost the whole thing split this one with Adam at Little Man Ice Cream when Kate and Jared were in town. I also might have made another banana split when I got home from babysitting today. No way to know for sure.... besides the banana peel in the compost and the dirty bowl in the sink :)

I also got to celebrate my first almost mother's day! We had a full fun day with friends and Adam got me flowers and Emily and Michelle found this sweet card for me. Baby is starting to move more and more so becoming a mom is definitely starting to feel more real! I'll be excited for the day Adam can feel it too!

6 months

Last weekend Adam and I went on a little road trip to celebrate our 6 month anniversary!  We have a National Parks pass so we thought we'd make the most of it and go to Arches, Mesa Verde and Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.  It was great to get away from work, chores and to-do lists and be in beautiful places!  Adam planned the whole thing and did most of the driving!  I offered to drive some of our last day but I only lasted about 3 hours :)  It was super snowy and we got stuck behind someone from Arizona who was very content to go 20 under the speed limit through the mountain passes.  I was frustratingly tailgaiting patiently following our Arizona friends when Adam offered to drive again. What can I say- he's a GREAT HUSBAND.

In other news... I officially have a baby bump, I think I could be the new spokesperson for Zofran (a med that gets rid of nauseau), I now love and live in my maternity jeans, time on campus is coming to a close for the school year, my daffodils bulbs are blooming and Kate and Jared are coming to visit today!

Here's a few photos of our trip:

Love Muffin Cafe in Moab- great breakfast burritos

moments of vanity and maternity jeans

vanity |ˈvanətē|noun ( pl. -ties)excessive pride in or admiration of one's own appearance or achievements it flattered his vanity to think I was in love with him the personal vanities and ambitions of politicians. See notes at egotism, pride .• [as adj. denoting a person or company that publishes works at the author's expense vanity press.the quality of being worthless or futile the vanity of human wishes.dressing table.• bathroom unit consisting of a washbasin typically set into a counter with a cabinet beneath.

For the purpose of the post, I mostly relate to definition numero uno. I was actually pretty unaware of my vanity, until last week when two conversations totally led to one vain conclusion...
Conversation #1- In the bathroom- I got on the scale and was crying to adam processing through gaining 3 pounds since I've gotten pregnant. "I feel anxious to gain weight cause it will take forever to loose it.""But..you're pregnant"
Conversation #2 - Adam had an intervention with me about maternity jeans. "Why don't you want to wear your maternity jeans?""Cause I don't want to be showing yet.""Why?""Because I want to look like one of those super fit pregnant women who don't show until they are further along" (which I realize is totally unrealistic- I'm in healthy shape but I have never nor probably will ever describe myself as super fit)"But your other jeans are uncomfortable""I know, but I don't want to have to wear maternity jeans yet?""But why would you wear jeans that are uncomfortable when you have jeans that were made to wear when you are pregnant?""Because I am vain." ...and cue conviction....
I remember as a kid stuffing pillows under my shirt to make-believe I was pregnant. Funny how now when it's really happening, I get super body-conscious and focused on me.me.me.me.me and my appearance... and miss the joy in it! Somehow pregnancy becomes about how I look, or want to look and not about this incredible life that God is forming inside of me. Thankfully, I have people like Adam in my life who bring me back to reality and remind me of what's really important.  We had a midwfie appointment on Wednesday and got to hear the heartbeat again and the baby had moved up a ton! It's now sitting just below my belly button over on the right side.  Baby actually l.o.v.e.s the right side and has been there all week. When I look down at my stomach, the right side sticks out more than the left- which actually looks pretty funny. Everyday, the reality of having a baby becomes more and more real and I am totally floored by God's ability to create life and form people in his perfect timing.
Dear Sweet Baby, bring on the nausea, weight gain, side pain, migraines, whatever...you are totally worth it!
